Lately, I have been thinking a lot about corner stores, bodega types. But more like the corner liquor stores in SF where I was raised. The stores carried the essential Nag Champa and 40s and every apartment had the scent of Nag Champa wafting through the house covering up and mixing with other strong scents, if you know what I mean. We were young and relaxed, hanging out on Steiner and Oak. An apartment full of misses and a neighborhood full of skaters and thug niggas. In the house there was family dinners, tormented hallway parties, foggy bbq’s, and plenty of sleepovers. It was the spring and summer of Barrington Levy and Eryka Badu on the turntables. Shouts out to EMB crew, Thrasher Magazine, Bored Stiff, City Side Crew, DJ Melsi, Underground Railroad, Mystic Journeymen, and all those other Bayside standards from back in the day.
